----- Original Message ----- From: "Andrew Wilson" <andrew.wilson@arch.ox.ac.uk> To: <rome-arch@yahoogroups.com> Sent: Tuesday, November 29, 2005 6:33 PM Subject: [rome-arch] Doctoral studentship on the Roman Economy The following notice is of potential interest to all current and recent Master's students in Classics, Archaeology and related disciplines. Please pass it on to anyone you think may be both interested and eligible. The Economy of the Roman Empire: D.Phil. studentship The Faculty of Classics, University of Oxford, is running an AHRC-funded project on Integration, Growth and Decline in the Roman Economy c. 100 BC to AD 300, under the direction of Professor Alan Bowman (Camden Professor of Ancient History) and Professor Andrew Wilson (Professor of the Archaeology of the Roman Empire), from October 2005 to September 2009. In addition to two postdoctoral research posts (already filled), the project also has three years' funding for one D.Phil. student, to begin in October 2006. The holder of the studentship must become a registered D.Phil. student in the Sub-faculty of Ancient History and Classical Archaeology. In order to qualify under AHRC rules, the student must be a UK or EU citizen. In the former case, a full fees-plus-maintenance award can be made, in the latter a fees-only award. Anyone who by 1 October 2006 will have completed a suitable Master's course or the equivalent can apply for the studentship.Applicants should have either Roman history or archaeology as their primary specialization. This research project aims to establish secure criteria by which we can identify the levels of integration, growth and contraction in the economy of the Mediterranean under Roman rule and focuses on four crucial diagnostic areas - agriculture, trade and commerce, mining and metal supply, urbanisation and demography, which allow some degree of measurement and quantification. The data assembled will be used to address the major structural features of the economy, including mechanisms of government control, volume of trade, nature of markets. The successful applicant will make a proposal of his or her own choosing which will make a substantive contribution to the work of the project in one or more of the areas specified, using documentary or archaeological data, or a combination of the two. Anyone interested in being considered for the studentship should initially contact Professor Alan Bowman (alan.bowman@classics.ox.ac.uk, or Brasenose College, Oxford OX1 4AJ), preferably by 10 January 2006. Further details about application procedures will be provided later.
