2nd Conference “Saudade Perpétua”: Art, Culture and Heritage of Romanticism
São Miguel island, Azores, Portugal, 28-30 September, 2018
CALL FOR PAPERS
The “Saudade Perpétua” informal group and the “Heritage, Culture and Tourism" research group of the CEPESE - Centro de Estudos da População, Economia e Sociedade (Universidade do Porto), are pleased to announce the 2nd Conference “Saudade Perpétua“, to be held in São Miguel island, in the Azores (Portugal), from 28th to 30th September, 2018.
Scholars with a special interest in the long 19th century are encouraged to submit a paper to this conference, particularly if their research addresses art, culture, or heritage of Romanticism, not only in Portugal but also in closer cultures, both in Occidental Europe and elsewhere (like in the former Portuguese colonies).
Although sustaining the general subject and purposes of the first conference held in 2016 (in Vila Nova de Gaia and in Porto: https://saudadeperpetua.weebly.com/galeria1.html), the 2nd Conference “Saudade Perpétua“, will have two panels: - One with a thematic nature in which papers will be dedicated to Graphic Arts of Romanticism;
- The other with a more general nature in which all other papers consisting of art, culture and heritage of Romanticism will be framed.
The proceedings will reflect this division into two panels – one with a thematic nature and the other with a broader approach – and can actually be published in two separate volumes.
It is generally considered that Romanticism in Portugal was deeply conveyed from 1834 to 1910, which politically corresponds to a constitutional monarchy. Nonetheless and because in certain areas of knowledge and arts, as well as in certain social fringes, there were several pre-romantic and late-romantic phenomena, original papers about any theme related to Romanticism in a broad sense can be proposed to the 2nd Conference “Saudade Perpétua”. Possible areas of inquiry include but are not limited to: - Institutions, society, fashion, publicity, ethnography and custom, urbanism, architecture and landscaping (cottages, mansions, hospitals, museums, theatres, train stations, administrative buildings, schools, market places, abolished convents, factories, working-class districts, summer resorts, viewpoints and belvederes, greenhouses, thermalism and holidays, vernacular architecture, urban furniture, public monuments, cemeteries and tombs, statuary, tiles, plastering, mural painting, etc.), fine arts, decorative and industrial arts (scenography, painting, engraving and lithography, photography, caricature, furnishing, jewellery, sculpture, masonry, metalwork and casting, terracotta and pottery, etc), music, literature (including memoirs, travelogues, albums, love letters, obituaries, etc.), media, science, technology, industry, families and personalities (titleholders, politicians and diplomats, tradesmen, returned emigrants, artists, editors and reporters, teachers, physicians, etc.).
Papers approaching tangible or intangible heritage from the Romanticist period, namely as tourist attractions (including its maintenance or restoration works), will also be considered, as well as papers that establish resemblances with Romanticism in cultures similar to the Portuguese one, or in cultures that served as a model to Portuguese Romanticism. For the thematic panel of this 2nd Conference “Saudade Perpétua”, we will prioritise papers that convey the theme of Graphic Arts of Romanticism in any way; that is, all proposals that focus on: - Artists, artisans, manufacturers, retailers (typographies, editors, stationers, designers, engravers, lithographers, bookbinders, paper factories, type foundries, etc.);
- Technical processes (engraving, lithographic processes, other printing processes, stamping, photographic reproductions, etc.);
- Materials and purposes (illustrated press, caricature, publicity, catalogues, books, educational stencils, maps, bookbindings, photographic cards, receipts, business cards, labels, packages, diplomas, fans, letter paper, paper money, titles and stocks, stamps, ex-libris, heraldic charts, scores, religious stencils, wall paper, etc.);
- Aesthetic evolution, from Classicism to Art Déco (vignettes, borders, friezes, ornaments and other embellishments, printed characters and calligraphic arts, etc.);
- Models and imitations, foreigner artists and artisans and their mobility;
- Iconography (objects, allegorical symbols and representations, monograms, medals and badges of honour, portraits, landscapes and vistas, etc.).
Papers in Portuguese, English, Spanish, French or Italian will be accepted. However, all the conference works will be led in Portuguese.
Paper proposals should be sent to saudadeperpetua@gmail.com or through the contact form at http://saudadeperpetua.weebly.com/contacto.html until the end of March 2018.
All paper proposals must have, by the following order:
- Title, author’s name, affiliation (if applicable).
- An abstract, with a maximum of 350 words, in which the proponent briefly explains the main subject of the paper and what are its original contributions. This abstract should be complemented with, at least, three keywords.
- A bio-bibliographical note with a maximum of 100 words per author.
Proposals that don’t include all the abovementioned elements will not be considered.
Although there is a thematic panel and a general panel, the 2nd Conference “Saudade Perpétua” won’t have parallel sessions. All sessions will be plenary. In case the number of approved proposals by the Scientific Committee is higher than the maximum number of expected sessions, authors with more than one approved proposal may have to forsake the presentation of one of it, even though the organizers will guarantee the publication of all accepted papers in the proceedings.
Submission results will be communicated before the end of June 2018.
