A Research Assistant or Research Associate is required for a 3 year
Leverhulme research project: From chariotry to equestrian pastoral nomadism:
the evolving role of the horse. The role of the RA will be to support the
work of the Principal Investigator, Prof. Graeme Barker, and the Senior
Research Associate, Dr. Marsha Levine. The post will be based at the
McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research.
The post-holder will assist Dr. Marsha Levine with the rapid collection of
large data sets in the field (central and east Asia), and with analysis of
the resulting data in Cambridge. The quantity and complexity of the data
throughout this project will necessitate full-time assistance. The RA will
be responsible for the routine updating and maintenance of archaeozoological
databases, including data inputting, image scanning, and processing. He/she
will be responsible for the preparation and curation of skeletons and other
materials, drawing, photocopying, some photography, library and web
searches, and research support, etc. He/she will assist with project fund
raising, making travel arrangements for fieldwork and other trips, and the
planning and organisation of project meetings and workshops to be held in
Cambridge. Other tasks may be requested subject to the skills and experience
of the post-holder.
Knowledge of Microsoft Office is vital, as is enthusiasm for learning new
skills. Experience with Adobe Creative Suite and website development would
be an advantage. Language skills (especially Russian, Chinese or German)
would be useful. A clean driver's license is desirable.
A degree in archaeology is necessary together with training in
archaeozoology ideally to Masters level or higher. Overseas travel will be
required (about 6-12 weeks a year). The ability to work well in a small team
is crucial. We are keen to attract somebody who would see this post as an
