Research Assistant or Research Associate
McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research
Salary: £20,842-£23,457 pa

Limit of Tenure: Fixed Term Funding, no renewal. 01.04.2007 - 31.03.2010

A Research Assistant or Research Associate is required for a 3 year Leverhulme research project: From chariotry to equestrian pastoral nomadism: the evolving role of the horse. The role of the RA will be to support the work of the Principal Investigator, Prof. Graeme Barker, and the Senior Research Associate, Dr. Marsha Levine. The post will be based at the McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research.

The post-holder will assist Dr. Marsha Levine with the rapid collection of large data sets in the field (central and east Asia), and with analysis of the resulting data in Cambridge. The quantity and complexity of the data throughout this project will necessitate full-time assistance. The RA will be responsible for the routine updating and maintenance of archaeozoological databases, including data inputting, image scanning, and processing. He/she will be responsible for the preparation and curation of skeletons and other materials, drawing, photocopying, some photography, library and web searches, and research support, etc. He/she will assist with project fund raising, making travel arrangements for fieldwork and other trips, and the planning and organisation of project meetings and workshops to be held in Cambridge. Other tasks may be requested subject to the skills and experience of the post-holder.

Knowledge of Microsoft Office is vital, as is enthusiasm for learning new skills. Experience with Adobe Creative Suite and website development would be an advantage. Language skills (especially Russian, Chinese or German) would be useful. A clean driver's license is desirable.

A degree in archaeology is necessary together with training in archaeozoology ideally to Masters level or higher. Overseas travel will be required (about 6-12 weeks a year). The ability to work well in a small team is crucial. We are keen to attract somebody who would see this post as an opportunity to develop a career in archaeology/archaeozoology.

A PD18 form, which must accompany your posted application, is available from Sara Harrop at the McDonald Institute on 01223-339284 or email slh30@cam.ac.uk.
