Will take place in Catania, organized by the Istituto per i Beni Archeologici e Monumentali of the Italian National Research Council and the Faculty of Classics of the University of Catania, a International Summer School in Classical Archaeology

The Summer School is an advanced course in the most up to date methods and theories for the study of pottery from the Late Hellenistic and Roman imperial periods, i.e. pottery manufactured and/or circulating in the Mediterranean countries from the 2nd century BC to the 7th century AD. Participation is open to students from Italy and abroad at Bachelor level, as well as post-graduates and Ph.D. students. The teachers are among the best qualified experts in this field of research at a national and international level, who will convey their insights into traditional and innovative approaches to the study of Hellenistic and Roman pottery through a combination of lectures, case studies and practical exercises. The Summer School provides an ideal environment not only for acquiring information, but also for exchanging ideas and discussions about the current state of knowledge of artisanal production in the Hellenistic and Roman worlds.

Main organizing institutions are the Istituto per i Beni Archeologici e Monumentali of the Italian National Research Council, the Faculty of Classics of the University of Catania, the Institute of Classical Archaeology of Tarragona (Spain), the Schools of Advanced Study on Archaeology of the University of Salento and Catania, the Assessorato dei Beni Culturali ed Ambientali della Regione Sicilia, the Assessorato alle Politiche Culturali della Provincia Regionale di Catania, the Icrates project of the Catholic University of Leuven and the University of Cadiz (Spain).

Those admitted to the Summer School will be given the possibility of carrying out practical exercises on ceramic material from the Late Hellenistic and Roman imperial periods. In this part of the course, the students will interact directly with the teachers, which is probably the best way of gaining an understanding of the problems associated with the various classes of pottery from the different production centres of the Mediterranean. The students will carry practical exercises on the extraordinary groups of Roman pottery founded in the harbour area of ancient Brindisi. Thanks to the courtesy of the Archaeological Superintendence of Puglia and the Department of Cultural Heritage of University of Salento, the rich context will be showed in a dedicated space in the Faculty of Classics in Catania.

The admission fee fro the Summer School is Euro 250,00 wich comprises participation in the lectures, exercises, two guided excursion at Syracuse and Piazza Armerina and a free-copy of the Proceeding of Old Pottery in a new Century. Innovating Perspectives on Roman pottery studies (eds, D. Malfitana, J. Poblome and John Lund), Catania, 2006.
