Call for papers!

The Durham Medieval Archaeologists (DMA) are holding four student-led
workshops entitled, /Sensory Perceptions in Medieval Society, AD
450-1600/. The first will be in October 2008 and the last in September
2009, all to be held in the Department of Archaeology, Durham University.

If you are a postgraduate student (from archaeology or another
discipline, such as English studies, history, or geography) studying
anything related to the five Classical senses (taste & scent, sound,
vision, touch) from the medieval period these workshops will be the
perfect opportunity for you to present your research in an informal
setting where current ideas and approaches to sensory perceptions and
the lived experience in the medieval world will be explored.

Dates and workshop titles:

11th October 2008 'Taste and Scent in the Medieval Past'

29th November 2008 'Medieval Vision'

6th March 2009 'Sound and Silence in Medieval Life'

t.b.c. September 2009 'Magic Touch: tactile experience in the medieval past'

We hope the workshops will provide a dynamic forum within which
postgraduate students from the arts and humanities can explore and
exchange of ideas on the medieval past and we are keen to learn from and
inform debates on sensory perception in prehistoric and Roman
archaeologies, where theoretical frameworks have been established.
