ICAHM Session:
Technology and Archaeological Site Management at Petra
Petra Workshop on Documentation and Conservation
of Stone Deterioration in Heritage Places
December 7-12, 2010
Amman and Petra, Jordan
Archaeological site management is ultimately about the arrangement and use of space. To do this in a way that preserves archaeological resources, provides an enriching experience to visitors, and benefits local populations, several tasks must be accomplished successfully. These include identifying and recording important and fragile resources, monitoring resource conditions, managing visitor flow, surveying and enhancing the experience of visitors as they move through the landscape, and assessing the well-being of local residents. A wide variety of technologies are now available that can contribute to our ability to effectively manage spaces at archaeological sites. These include GPS, GIS, aerial and satellite remote sensing, on-ground remote sensing, and computerized data bases. The ICAHM workshop session will examine how these technologies have been used in the past in the service of site management, current technological initiatives, and technologies that might be useful to site management in the future.
