This study presents a comprehensive review of the crocodile god Sobek
of Shedet during the dynastic period. Closely linked to the destiny of his
own town, Shedet, and region, the fertile Fayyum, the god was one of the most
interesting and enduringly popular deities of the Egyptian pantheon. The book
provides a mine of information and insight into this fascinating figure and
analyses several aspects of the god, in particular the evolution of his
identity and nature, his connections with the ruling kings, his associations
with the falcon god Horus and the royal ideology, his roles in myths and his
receptions among the inhabitants of the Fayyum region. This volume will be of
great interest to scholars in the religion and history of the Fayyum, and
also to those involved with the study of the ancient Egyptian civilization
and of the religion in the ancient world.
E la prima opera in grado di offrire, in un quadro esaustivo e completo, un
esame della documentazione e della figura del dio coccodrillo Sobek di Shedet
durante l’epoca dinastica. Strettamente legato al destino della sua
citta, Shedet, e della sua regione, il fertile Fayyum, il dio fu senza dubbio
una delle divinita piu interessanti e popolari del pantheon egiziano. Il
volume analizza diversi aspetti di questa affascinante divinita, in
particolare l’evoluzione e lo sviluppo della sua identita e natura, la
sua associazione con il dio falco Horo e l’ideologia regale, il suo
ruolo in alcuni miti e il suo rapporto con i sovrani regnanti e le modalita
con cui la sua figura divina venne percepita, nel corso dei secoli, dagli
abitanti stessi della sua regione. Il volume potra interessare non solo gli
studiosi della religione e storia del Fayyum, ma anche per tutti co- loro
coinvolti nello studio della civilta egiziana in generale e del- le religioni
del mondo antico.
