# School of Archaeology and Ancient History, University of Leicester and Amgueddfa Cymru - National Museum Wales AHRC Collaborative Doctoral Award

## Free-reins and guiding-hands: Iron Age and early Roman chariot fittings from western and central Britain

Applications are invited for a fully funded AHRC Collaborative Doctoral Award between the School of Archaeology and Ancient History, University of Leicester and Amgueddfa Cymru - National Museum Wales.

The aim of the PhD is to study the large number of Iron Age and early Roman chariot terrets from western and central Britain, drawing upon many recently recorded by the Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS) and held within museum collections. These highly variable and often decorated fittings, spanning the period from c400 BC--AD 150, will generate insights into themes such as changing social and regional identities, martial display and conflict, the organisation of metalworking, wheeled transport and long-distance contacts. The project will consider chronological and geographical trends, drawing upon radiocarbon dating evidence, building up data through XRF scanning and considering styles and making techniques. The focus on western and central Britain will encourage new understanding of the complexity of Iron Age societies and trajectories of change over this zone, exploring cultural responses and hybrid identities on the frontiers of Roman expansion.

The student will be registered at the University of Leicester and supervised by Professor Colin Haselgrove. Adam Gwilt of the Department of Archaeology and Numismatics will be the National Museum's supervisor, with additional support provided by Mary Davis, Mark Lodwick and Richard Brewer. Although based in Leicester, the student will also use National Museum Cardiff as a research base, and will be given researcher rights, workspace, training and support here for the duration of their doctoral research. He/she will also be encouraged to make research visits to other relevant museums and expected to participate in relevant and agreed National Museum and PAS organised activities, making their research accessible to wider public audiences and users.

Required: a good BA and MA or relevant additional experience.

Desirable: experience of studying material culture; some awareness of Iron Age and Romano-British archaeology; personable & diplomatic with finders; skills: photographic / artefact recording or databases or analytical aptitude.

The studentship is tenable for a maximum of three years, commencing October 2011, at an annual stipend currently of £13,590 and also covers postgraduate tuition fees at the UK/EU rate. National Museum Wales will pay an additional £1,000 per year for three years and contribute up to £250 per year for three years towards costs and expenses of research visits (such as travel and subsistence).
For further details of the project contact mailto:cch7@le.ac.uk

Application for the studentship is by CV, a covering letter explaining why you are well-suited for this research project, together with any supporting documents or material you wish to include. Please also arrange for two academic references to be sent independently by the deadline. All material should be sent to the School Postgraduate Secretary, Rachel Godfrey (mailto:rem17@le.ac.uk)

Deadline for applications: 12 noon, Monday 13 June; interviews will take place on Tuesday 28 June
