► Decorative designs of harpoon points entail a higher labour investment than decorative designs of beads. ► Harpoon decoration shows a faster rate of change than bead decoration. ► Harpoon decoration suggests greater individual input while bead decoration suggests stricter collective production/display. ► Artefact types, functions and loss/fracture risks influence the increase-decrease of artefact decoration. ► Harpoon decoration covaries with pinniped hunting.
