Delminda Mouro (Centro de Investigação Marinha e Ambiental, UALG) will give a presentation 'The Preservation of Underwater Remains Environmental Variables'.
Abstract:
Continental shelves may preserve relevant information concerning past landscapes and human occupation, the degree of preservation depending on several environmental variables such as - tectonics, substrate properties, marine climate, sedimentary input and sea level changes. This talk will look at the effects of these variables over time particularly during the Holocene transgression - a time when sea level changes resulted in the current shelves' morphology was shaped by depositional and erosional processes. The techniques and methods used in underwater investigaiton are quite recent and generally the resolution is not accurate enough for archaeological purposes and in addition underwater investigation is very expensive. Therefore, it is of fundamental importance to know the processes involved in landscapes and the preservation of remains.
