A Celebration of Encompassing the Globe in Portugal Led by Exhibition Curator Jay Levenson and Julian Raby, Director of the Freer Gallery of Art and the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery
September 21 - September 26, 2009 During the summer of 2007, the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery featured the largest show in its history, Encompassing the Globe: Portugal and the World in the 16th and 17th Centuries. With its rich mix of objects, global message and major components devoted to the art and culture of Japan, China, India, Africa, and Brazil, this ambitious exhibition was a true sensation and attracted over 340,000 visitors from all over the world.
Jay Levenson, lead curator of Encompassing the Globe and Director of the International Program at The Museum of Modern Art, and Director Julian Raby invite the Friends of the Freer and Sackler Galleries to experience Encompassing the Globe in Portugal with them from September 21-September 26, 2009.
This exhibition is on view at the Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga in Lisbon from July 15 until October 11, and includes a number of national treasures that were not shown in Washington because they cannot leave Portugal.
In addition to exclusive access to the show and many experts who contributed to it, this six-day excursion will take you behind-the-scenes to the most stunning private art collections and cultural venues in northern Portugal and will introduce you to the regional cuisine and drink through unique dining experiences at acclaimed eateries and private homes. Synopsis of the Tour
LISBON -- 4 nights![]() We will base our stay in the luxurious Lapa Palace. Built in the 19th-century, this converted palace is nestled on a hilltop overlooking the Tagus River. Visits to the private collections of several lenders to Encompassing the Globe will be the highlight of our stay in Lisbon. We will also tour the private grounds of the Palácio dos Marquises de Fronteira and visit a fifteenth-century collection of ceramic tiles and Moorish mosaics at the Museu Nacional do Azulejo. In the Belém area, we will admire the Museu Nacional dos Coches' exquisite collection of carriages adorned with gilded wood and painted panels and visit the Torre de Belém, a memorial to Portuguese power in the Age of Discovery. Additional highlights in Lisbon will include exclusive visits to the French Embassy, with it dramatic ceiling of blue-and-white Chinese porcelain, and the renowned collections of the Museu Calouste Gulbenkian, spanning over 4,000 years. We will discover the magical town of Sintra, set on the north slopes of the granite Serra, dine in a seventeenth-century fortress overlooking the ocean, and explore the beautiful Rococo architecture of the Palácio de Queluz.

Discovering the charming towns of Tomar and Coimbra along the way, we will drive through the breathtaking countryside of Portugal's Douro region to Porto. Portugal's second largest city, Porto is famous for its "Port" wine and stunning architecture. Porto's city center has been designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
We will stay in the Sheraton Porto Hotel and Spa, situated in the heart of the city where we can take advantage of the area's sumptuous cuisine and outdoor dining options.
