Dear Friends and Colleagues,

Besides economical-social-historical-heritage issues which are imbued in our society, cultural and scientific initiatives of this kind reaffirm the premise of knowledge acquisition and positive discussion amidst fellows, deepening what one knows and opening other doors. Our objective in ANIMUSIC is to bring together collaborative keen people, to expand our tribute to art and science, preparing with care such unique occasions without any direct return for us except the sharing itself of such special events. This meeting is only possible thanks to the contribution of everyone, from different areas of study and Art. If you know of interesting research about instruments or sound studies, from your friends and colleagues, if you know of fantastic artists that perform for the sake of pure love for the Art knowing those listening are the best supporters, who can bring novelty, more knowledge, variety about the instruments and their relation to the creative sound, please spread the information about this event. It's there, usually in Portugal, for you and them.

The closing date for paper proposals is the 30th of April - for other proposals it's preferable to propose until the 31st of May.

Dear Friends,
 

our next Organological Congress promises to be very special - not one, but various events, are being prepared for an intense and involving meeting. Caldas da Rainha, founded by Queen D. Leonor (1458-1525) as her favourite hot springs land with a specialised hospital, is located 90km north of Lisboa, about one hour drive from the international airport, on the west coast. Still, before we start there, consider coming on the 2^nd of July to Lisbon, since we are programming a special private visit to the famous Museu dos Coches permanent exhibition and reserve (the world's largest coaches museum), for a close observation of the 18th-century instruments in this collection, as well as a guided visit to the Music Museum, also in Lisboa. We shall hire a bus to help with the transportation to Caldas da Rainha on that afternoon (if a minimum number of reservations is obtained). As some of you already know, the Museu dos Coches is situated near the superb 15^th-century Monastery of Jerónimos and the 16^th-century Tower of Belém, in the western river-area of Lisboa – these are some of the unique UNESCO world heritage monuments not to miss in the capital of Portugal, that you have the occasion to visit at your leisure. Other locals of interest are planned during the days of the congress, namely to the village of Óbidos and to the coast seaside.

 

 

 

 

ANIMUSIC seeks for participants to enjoy every moment, organising an interesting and diversified program. The registration fee is the minimum possible for what it covers, considering each individual’s expenses only (other expenses are co-financed by our sponsors): meals, coffee-breaks, bag, materials, equipment, program book, concerts, etc., with no profit for the society, whose volunteers organize all with the sole intent of “making it happen” – preparing a space and time for such an amazing gathering of keen folks. We all, who participate, keep going forward, recognising the most important results: what each and every one of us brings that complement others, the special partaking, the sharing and the fulfilment of being part of this experience.
 

We invite everyone to join us in Caldas da Rainha in July – each contribution is essential for the whole.

CALL FOR PROPOSALS
 the date limit for abstracts' submission is the 30th of April. We welcome also proposals for recitals, concerts, workshops, other activities or participation at the Exhibition primarily until the 31st of May. More information may be consulted on the website (link).

BRASS FOCUS
directed by Dr Arnold Myers, one of the most active experts on organology, to whom our community expresses gratitude for his support to ANIMUSIC and his excellent long work dedicated to Organology. This Focus has the partnership of the Historical Brass Society, which has, for many years, made an important contribution to this specialized field.

ABOUT
In ANIMUSIC's international conferences, bridging in such a special way the spheres of Science and Art, participation from all subject areas is very welcome, this being an open community which is interested in research that deals, in any way, with sound and musical instruments. We look for relevant work and creative output, for practical demonstrations and performance, for workshops and exhibitions, proposing a space and time for positive exchange and discussions. Following the European Year 2018, and inspired by the wonderful coast of Portugal near our host, the Museum Jose Malhoa, located in Caldas da Rainha, the general theme of this congress appeals to considerations on the differences and the similarities of the various “coasts”, regions, creeds, customs, human and natural creations…, considering the links and transversality from and of knowledge and praxis: «Beyond the broad coast horizon - diversity and transversality in cultural heritage». ANIMUSIC's Organological Congresses avoid parallel sessions and promote interdisciplinary involvement, purposely mixing the various areas of research (except on particular Sessions dedicated to the Focus, this year being brass instruments) – consequently, there is a limited number of accepted proposals in order to stimulate close contacts between the community and personal involvement in the supported activities, intermingling participants from all over the world. The location and date of the congresses are changed every year in order to promote visits to diversified places of cultural importance and new experiences in this amazing Portugal.
