WHAT IS THIS STUFF ALL ABOUT? 
Material Culture for Historians, Art Historians and Curators

"What is this stuff all about?" is an English-taught summer course offered by NOVA School of Social Sciences and Humanities in Lisbon. The course runs from the 17th to the 31st of July 2018, on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

In this course we explore and discuss theoretical proposals, methodological approaches and case-studies that have shaped the debate about the uses of material culture for historical research. Each session is organised around one relevant paper from a distinguished scholar which constitutes the basis to think about and question objects, materials and narratives.

By the end of the course, students will:

a) be able to think about objects from multiple points of view: economical, artistic, social, material, cultural, political, etc;
b) be aware of some important theoretical debates regarding the study of material culture;
c) be able to analyse discourses created around objects and to consider alternatives to them (namely in museums and historiography on consumption).

The course will be conducted by Bruno A Martinho, PhD Researcher at the European University Institute, in Florence and member of the CHAM, Centre for the Humanities, in Lisbon.
