OR for Development Conference July 9-10, 2015, Graham Hills Building,University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, ScotlandOR: Uplifting Living ConditionsIn both developed and developing countries, problems of poor planning,policy execution and institutional weaknesses have contributed greatly tothe problems we face today such as hunger, poverty, pollution, massivewealth divide, poor education, inadequate health services, inadequatedisaster response, access to government services.Armed with the tools necessary to alleviate these conditions, manyOperations Researchers have worked in these areas. A quick look at thepapers in literature (such as those found inhttp://ifors.org/developing_countries/index.php?title=Main_Page) includingentries and winners of the IFORS Prize for OR in Development(http://ifors.org/web/ifors-prize-for-or-in-development/) will show that alot of work had been done in OR for Development.This conference aims to bring together operations researchers who have usedOR tools to address problems in education, health (e.g., spread ofinfectious diseases), basic public services, water, technology, resource use(physical or financial), infrastructure, agricultural, industrialization,environmental sustainability, energy, unabated population growth and climatechange.Call for ParticipantsParticipants must submit their work (either full paper or abstract of notless than 1,500 words) to to Honora Smith (honora.smith@soton.ac.uk) by 16March 2015.Conference FormatThe Workshop will feature presentations by the participants of their papers.Paper reviewers will be assigned in advance. All participants will be givenall the papers of accepted participants in advance, which will give themtime to study the other papers. Ample time will be given for a discussion ofeach of the papers presented.There will also be a plenary session where invited speakers from the wellknown company Simul8 will talk about their experiences in using thecompany¹s excellent visual simulation software, Simul8, in a variety ofprojects and the benefits that resulted. The session will include a workshopwhich will enable delegates to try out Simul8 and see the power of visualsimulation for themselves .=Important DatesExtended Abstract Submission: March 16, 2015Notification of Acceptance: March 20, 2015Subsidised Conference Registration Fee: EURO 200, inclusive of materials,snacks & lunchSupport for ParticipantsA limited number of slots for accommodation and registration support will beavailable, and will depend on the quality of material submitted. |
