La serie internacional de congresos City & Micro Region in the Ancient Mediterranean (and Beyond) investiga las ciudades antiguas y sus micro-regiones circundantes como sistemas socioecológicos interconectados. La serie pone de relieve la mutua interrelación entre los ámbitos urbano y rural a lo largo del espacio y del tiempo. Su objetivo es fomentar una comprensión diacrónica y comparativa de las dinámicas urbanas y regionales del pasado, contribuyendo así a los debates contemporáneos sobre las ciudades, los entornos y las sociedades.

Tras un inicio apasionante en Madrid el pasado mes de mayo, la conferencia organizada conjuntamente entra ahora en su segunda fase. Del 30 de octubre al 1 de noviembre de 2025, investigadores internacionales se reunirán de nuevo para debatir sobre las ciudades antiguas y sus micro-regiones —esta vez en el Departamento de Estambul del Instituto Arqueológico Alemán—.

La segunda parte de la serie se centra en la representación, percepción y planificación de las configuraciones ciudad–micro-región, y las amplía abordando temas clave como la conectividad, la integración y la perspectiva global. Entre otros aspectos, se tratarán cuestiones como la interacción marítima, la interconexión regional y la relevancia de las configuraciones ciudad–micro-región más allá del ámbito del Mediterráneo antiguo.

El primer día concluirá con una conferencia vespertina a cargo del Prof. D.Phil. John Ma (Columbia University), titulada “On micro-regionalism”, seguida de una recepción en el Consulado General de Alemania.

The international City & Micro‑Region in the Ancient Mediterranean (and Beyond) conference series investigates ancient cities and their surrounding micro-regions as interconnected socio-ecological systems. It emphasises the mutual entanglement of urban and rural areas across space and time. The series intends to foster a diachronic and comparative understanding of urban and regional dynamics in the past, contributing to wider debates on cities, environments, and societies today.

Following an exciting start in Madrid in May, the jointly organised conference is currently entering its second phase. From 30 October to 1 November 2025, international researchers will meet again to discuss ancient cities and their micro-regions — this time at the Istanbul Department of the German Archaeological Institute.

The second part of the conference series looks at the representation, perception, and planning of city & micro-region configurations and goes beyond them by discussing key themes such as connectivity, integration, and the global perspective. This includes, for instance, maritime interaction, regional entanglement, and the relevance of city&micro-region configurations beyond the ancient Mediterranean.

The first day of the City and Micro-region in the Ancient Mediterranean (and Beyond) conference will close with an evening lecture by Prof. D.Phil. John Ma (Columbia University) on the topic ‘On micro-regionalism’, followed by a reception at the German Consulate General.
