Dear Colleague,

MAPPA Lab at the University of Pisa, Department of Civilisations and Forms of Knowledge, is pleased to announce the new Postgraduate Degree Course in Artificial Intelligence for Archaeology and Cultural Heritage ("Master universitario di II livello", 60 ECTS, requiring a Master’s degree or equivalent for admission), designed to train specialists in the application of AI and digital technologies to archaeology and cultural heritage.

Programme:
The course will start on 11 January 2027 and will be delivered through live online classes, except for the final module, which will be held in person at the University of Pisa.

Upon successful completion, students will be awarded the official "Master universitario di II livello" diploma by the University of Pisa.

Participants will work with real archaeological datasets and cultural heritage case studies. They will learn how to use AI, Machine Learning, Python, geospatial AI, databases, semantic technologies, and 3D models for archaeological research and cultural heritage management. The Postgraduate Degree Course is organised into 9 teaching modules, covering:
  • Digital archaeology and AI for cultural heritage;
  • Python programming for archaeology;
  • Databases, ontologies and the semantic web;
  • Statistical methods for archaeology;
  • Robotics for archaeological documentation and monitoring;
  • AI and machine learning with Python;
  • 3D modelling and information systems;
  • GIS, spatial analysis and AI;
  • AI for image and text processing and large language models.
The course concludes with an individual project addressing a real research or cultural heritage challenge.

General information:
  • The Postgraduate Degree Course is aimed at graduates wishing to combine expertise in archaeology and cultural heritage with artificial intelligence and digital technologies.
  • Previous programming experience is not required.
  • All lectures, course materials, and assessments are delivered in English.
  • The number of places is limited to 30 participants.
  • Tuition fees are €2,900, payable in 3 installments. 3 to 5 grants of €1,000 each are available and are awarded on the basis of both income and CV.
