[Estudantes UC] Curso de Estatística Avançada

Integrado no seu Curso de Doutoramento em Ciências do Desporto, a FCDEF organiza um Curso de Estatística Avançada, com a duração de 20 horas,  destinado a investigadores de qualquer área científica. 

A acção decorre nos dias 21 e 22 de Novembro de 2014, no Estádio Universitário de Coimbra. Os formadores são Ângela Gonçalves e William Astle, da Universidade de Cambridge, Inglaterra.

O curso é aberto a estudantes de pós-graduação, investigadores e docentes interessados. 

O custo da acção é de 150 euros. O pagamento pode ser efetuado em qualquer balcão do Serviço de Gestão Financeira da UC - a funcionar no Estádio Universitário às sextas-feiras, das 9.00h às 13.00h e das 14.00h às 18.00h. Poderá efetuar o pagamento no primeiro dia do curso a 21 de Novembro.

Programa 

Individual preparation (2h)

Why use R instead of other statistical packages? 

Introduction to R:

Transferring data to/from R (excel, SPSS, etc…)

Installing and getting help

Basic data manipulation

Commands for descriptive statistics

Simple plots in R.

Lecture and practical sessions (8h+7h)

Introduction to the course.

Statistical models, why we use them. Responses and predictors, factors and covariates.

Review of regression.

Review of likelihood theory.

Data exploration in R:

Checking data for patterns, relationships, structures and other features. 

Finding errors and outliers. 

What sort of model might be appropriate? 

Data mining.

Linear models for continuous data:

Simple linear regression.

Estimation of the parameters.

Testing the general linear hypothesis: t-test and F-tests.

Multiple linear regression.

ANOVA

Linear models for continuous data (cont.):

Regression diagnostics. Analysis of residuals.

Transforming the data.

Model selection.

Generalised linear models for binary and count data:

Logistic regression. Confounding and colinearity example.

Poisson regression.

Time series and longitudinal data.

 

Individual project (3h)

Explore a dataset relevant for sports sciences.

Optional modules (if there’s enough time)

Multilevel/hierarchical models. Fixed and random effects.

 

Requisites

Students *must* bring a laptop to the lectures/practicals and must have completed the Individual Preparation module prior to the start of the course.

The lectures will be run mostly in English.

Questions, discussion and projects can be delivered in both Portuguese and English.

The lectures will contact the students 3 weeks before the course with relevant information.
