During this long period, the Portuguese interacted with various peoples and civilizations, in Africa, Asia and America. A variety of fascinating artistic experiences arose from that interaction in which European aesthetics, technical solutions, and artistic sensibilities dialectically combined with those from other parts of the world. This symposium, jointly organized by the IFA and the CHAM (Center for Overseas History, Universidade Nova de Lisboa), will bring together an international group of scholars to discuss the different artistic results of that experience. Talks will cover Africa, India, China, Japan, and Brazil. The symposium will be organized in 3 panels A GLOBALIZED WORLD Jonathan BROWN, IFA, chair THE ASIAN WORLD Jonathan SPENCE, Yale, chair THE ATLANTIC WORLD Edward J.
