THE ARTS AND THE PORTUGUESE COLONIAL EXPERIENCE
Institute of Fine Arts, March 24 & 25 2006

The Portuguese colonial experience spans almost 600 years, from the
conquest of Ceuta, in Northern Africa, in 1415, to the return of Macao to
full Chinese sovereignty, in 1999. During this long period, the Portuguese
interacted with various peoples and civilizations, in Africa, Asia and
America. A variety of fascinating artistic experiences arose from that
interaction in which European aesthetics, technical solutions, and
artistic sensibilities dialectically combined with those from other parts
of the world. This symposium, jointly organized by the IFA and the CHAM
(Center for Overseas History, Universidade Nova de Lisboa), will bring
together an international group of scholars to discuss the different
artistic results of that experience. Talks will cover Africa, India,
China, Japan, and Brazil.

The symposium will be organized in 3 panels
