********************************************************************* CALL FOR PAPERS Dear All, UB's Interdisciplinary Group for Social Engagement GSA invites graduate students and faculty members of all academic departments to present work they are doing on issues of space, identity, urban planning, cultural geography, or other topics relevant to experiences of urban space at the community symposium "SURVEY: Re-Mapping Buffalo's Urban Space" that will be held April 4-5 at re-used architectural structures in the city. As the intentions behind designed spaces are often subverted by the actual movement of people through those spaces, the symposium will survey current and past experiences of urban space in Buffalo in an effort to raise awareness of our different spatial determinations, the way in which they are formed, and how actions are already being taken to redefine those determinations while improving the physical environment as well. The format of presentations is flexible; it may take the form of scholarly papers, reports, art installations, audio and visual productions, or videos. Presenters will have 20 minutes to discuss their work, followed by time for discussion, and the audience will be composed of members of community and activist groups, university students and faculty, and local policy-makers. Presenters need not contextualize their work within Buffalo issues specifically, but demonstration of how their work relates to situations we face in the local community is advisable. PLEASE post the attached call for works on departmental community boards and distribute it on relevant listservs. We look forward to this interdisciplinary and intercommunity dialogue! Sincerely, Crystal Hickerson The Interdisciplinary Group for Social Engagement SUNY at Buffalo Buffalo, NY 14260-4610 |
