# Maritime Archaeology: Engaging New Audiences

Contract term: Fixed term for 3 years
Location: Based in Southampton, with travelling to events and shows
Salary: £17,500 - £21,000
Hours: 37.5 per week, with flexibility to work weekends and evenings as
required
### Job Summary and Purpose
The Hampshire and Wight Trust for Maritime Archaeology are seeking
applications for the position of Education Officer for 'Maritime
Archaeology: Engaging New Audiences', a new initiative to broaden the
audience for maritime archaeology. You will be responsible for
developing and delivering educational initiatives within the project, in
particular through the use of a Community Outreach Van. You will work
closely with the Access and Outreach Officer to deliver the project.
As Education Officer you will be responsible for ensuring the successful
delivery of this project, including:
- Raising awareness of maritime archaeology to schools, community groups
and the wider public audience
- Development and delivery of maritime archaeology education initiatives
for people of all ages and abilities, with the aim of engaging existing
audiences and attracting new ones
- Working closely with the project's Access & Outreach Officer to
develop and deliver educational activities at events, with assistance
from volunteers
- Developing contact and relationships with local groups and
organisations; close working with these groups to successfully fulfil
the aims of the project
- Developing and expanding HWTMA's network of educators; working with
teachers and educators in the delivery of archaeology education
activities and materials which are closely linked to the National Curriculum
- Development of an educators' guide, illustrating how maritime
archaeology can be best used in learning. Be the main contact
information and provide back-up support for educators using the guide
- Recruitment of volunteers for education initiatives; appropriate
training and management of volunteers with reference to HWTMA's
Volunteer Policy
- Be responsible for all administration relating to education
initiatives undertaken during the project
- Be the main point of contact for all queries regarding the educational
aspects of the activities and sessions run during the project
### Essential Skills
- The successful applicant must be reliable and capable of taking
responsibility for the successful organisation and delivery of
educational initiatives for the project
- Ability to promote maritime archaeology to people of all ages and
background
- Knowledge of the National Curriculum
- Excellent written and spoken communication skills
- Ability to work on own initiative, with excellent organisational skills
- Good ICT skills
- Degree in Archaeology or History, preferably with experience of
maritime heritage
- Experience of developing and delivering archaeology educational
initiatives for people of all ages and abilities
- Experience of working with volunteers
- Full, clean driving licence
- Flexibility to work weekends and evenings. Some overnight stays will
be expected.
### Job dimensions
The post will be based at the Trust's office in Southampton, but a
significant proportion of time will be spent taking the Community
Outreach Van across the region, and occasionally nationwide. This will
include weekend and evening work, with occasional overnight stays.
