Magnetic moments in the past: developing archaeomagnetic dating for application in UK archaeology

Archaeological, Geographical & Environmental Sciences, University of Bradford and English Heritage

POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH ASSISTANT

REF: RAR0630
Grade 8, £31,513 - £35,469 per annum
Fixed term for 12 months
We seek applicants for a postdoctoral research assistant commencing April 2009 on a project to develop archaeomagnetic dating in UK archaeology. Funded under the Knowledge Transfer Fellowship Scheme of the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), the project will build on recent academic research to demonstrate and communicate the potential of archaeomagnetic dating of archaeological materials for routine use in the UK. Under the guidance of Cathy Batt (University of Bradford) and Paul Linford (English Heritage) you will collate and evaluate existing archaeomagnetic data, develop their use in dating and produce a web-based interface that will promote informed use of the method. You will be based at the University of Bradford but will regularly visit the Centre for Archaeology, English Heritage at Portsmouth.
Applicants should have experience in the application of scientific dating methods in archaeology and excellent IT skills. This is an exciting opportunity to work at the interface between academic research and its wider exploitation, and will allow you to enhance your research and communication skills, whilst gaining experience of academia and a national heritage organisation.
Closing date: 5pm on 30th January 2009
