The abstract submission deadline for the following is approaching.

“ON SEA AND OCEAN: NEW RESEARCH IN PHOENICIAN SEAFARING”

23-25 June 2011

In the absence of written records, the Phoenicians are seen through either
the prism of Greek, Roman, and Biblical literature or their material remains as
analyzed through archaeology.  During the past decade, nautical
archaeological aspirations have turned toward the presence and capabilities of
the Phoenicians sailing the Mediterranean, the Red Sea, and the Atlantic Ocean
with the goal of creating a better understanding of their role in the ancient
world.

The Marburg Center for the Ancient World, the Archäologisches Seminar at Philipps-Universität
Marburg, and the Deutsche Gesellschaft zur Förderung der
Unterwasserarchäologie (DEGUWA) invite papers for a
symposium on current and new evidence of Phoenician seafaring.  Papers in
German, English, French, and Italian on Phoenician maritime endeavors-- and
their Punic iterations-- are welcomed, particularly those concerning archaeological
discovery and analysis as well as new avenues of theory and research.
Accepted and presented papers will be published in a volume of the
proceedings.

Abstracts of approximately 75 words should be submitted by 15 March
2011 to the organizers at ralph.pedersen@staff.uni-marburg.de
