First Circular Invitation for papers
The aim of the conference is to provide an in-depth and multi-faceted
approach to amphora studies and to produce a synthesis of the data obtained
from recent research in the eastern Mediterranean. The intention is to bring
together specialists from various fields in order to exchange ideas and
communicate results on issues relating to the nature of amphora production
and trade. The topics that will be addressed range from typology,
archaeometry and seaborne trade to statistical analysis and theoretical
perspectives.
The conference will comprise oral presentations and workshops, including the
demonstration of manufacturing techniques in a pottery workshop, the
examination of the finds from an amphora kiln-site and the inspection of
thin-sections of eastern amphorae identified in Cyprus. The objective is to
achieve a practical understanding of the issues that will be examined during
the sessions and to stimulate further discussion. The programme will include
excursions to a number of archaeological sites.
