Research Associate for “Spatial Humanities: Texts, GIS and Places”

Salary:   £25,251 to £29,249
Closing Date:   Friday 02 March 2012
Interview Date:   Monday 02 April 2012

We wish to appoint a Research Associate with strong skills in Geographical Information Systems (GIS). The post-holder will work closely with Prof Ian Gregory and an inter-disciplinary team of researchers at Lancaster University. The project, funded by the European Research Council, will be developing GIS approaches to manipulating and analysing large volumes of text. Any experience of using qualitative material in addition to more conventional quantitative analytical approaches within a GIS environment will be an advantage. The techniques developed will be applied to a range of sources including Lake District literature, official reports, and newspapers.

The post-holder will have strong GIS and spatial analytical skills. A thorough knowledge of a GIS software package such as ArcGIS is essential. You will hold a postgraduate qualification involving extensive use of GIS which will preferably be at PhD level, although candidates holding a masters degree will also be considered. Good oral and written communication skills are essential, as is the ability to work independently within an inter-disciplinary team.

The post is a fixed-term appointment at 1.0 FTE from 1 May 2012, or as soon as possible thereafter, for 24 months to 30 April 2014.

More details on the project are available from: http://www.lancs.ac.uk/spatialhum. Informal enquiries may be directed to Prof Ian Gregory on 01524 594967, i.gregory@lancaster.ac.uk. For further details and to apply see: http://hr-jobs.lancs.ac.uk/Vacancy.aspx?ref=A380
