Não é só em Portugal que o lobby dos "caçadores de tesouros" actua - a palavra "looter" é mais caracterizadora.

Note-se o exemplo do KY - os motivos fazem rir, mas não deixam de ser ultrajantes...

I know some of you don’t live in Kentucky, but figured you would be just as outraged!

Bad News. Now we (the private citizens) really have to go to work on the House. Otherwise, KY historic and prehistoric properties are TOAST. I emailed all the sponsors of the Senate Bill, plus Senator Tom Buford (Boyle Co. Senator), plus the sponsors of HB 352 and the Rep for Boyle Co. a couple of days ago. I was up past midnight doing this. The ONLY one I heard from (and I got a personal email from him), was Buford. He told me he agreed with my philosophy about this. The sad fact is that a number of the Reps and Senators that sponsored thiese bill lives in the Louisville area, plus one from the Daviess County area and one from the Bowling Green area (Warren County).

Since I live in Boyle County, these guys don't really care what I think because I can't vote against them in the next election - but the folks from Louisville live in their districts. In "doing my homework" on this past weekend, I held my nose and got on some looters and pothunters websites and these groups were going viral over the "juicy pickings prospects". It was nauseating.  From what I can piece together, there is a big metal detecting group or club over in the Louisville area and along the Ohio River that persuaded these legislators to sponsor this bill. Their threat (and this is noted on their blogs, which were nauseating to read too, but I hung in there doing it), that they are telling these legislators that since KY parks and historic properties won't let them on the properties with their metal detectors and shovels, that they are taking their hobbiest dollars and tourist dollars and spending it at parks and other places in Indiana etc. that permit them to metal detect. Thus, they are using their threat of KY Parks and Historic Sites losing badly needed tourist dollars by taking their hotel money, gas money, food money and incidental money out of state so they can "discover" stuff  there.

One of their "selling points" is that they leave the grounds nicer and cleaner than they found it, claiming that they get "dangerous objects" they find with the detectors out of the parks and can protect children etc. from things like nails, pop can tabs and etc. However, I do not suspect that they are metal detecting to be good samaritans and safety personnel as the main reason they are out there. Never mind that only a tiny fraction of KY is state owned and they could hunt on private property with permission. Why do that if they can loot on a recognized historic location? Kind of like shooting fish in a barrel. They are also ticked off because, currently, Louisville Metro Parks won't let them do metal detecting there either.

Could I suggest that perhaps if you are uncomfortable using your corporate email address to lobby (not sure what the policy is) that personal email may be better....... If you are so inclined, please spread this info to everyone you can think of that may be willing to give these legislators an "against" email for this legislation. This legislation if it passes has the potential to create another "Slack Farm" scenario only this time it is going to be on state owned properties. One unsettled aspect of this is that if this passes, right now, state law says you have to get an archaeology permit from the OSA to dig. But, since this would conflict this current state law, it may have to be settled in a state court of some sort. Meanwhile, when has a looter respected a "permit" law......................?!

The bill to allow metal detecting in state parks, SB 105, has passed the Senate by a vote of 20-16.  It will now go on to the House Tourism, Development, and Energy Committee as HB 352.
