GREEN LOGISTICS AND VEHICLE ROUTING

Richard Eglese,

Management School

Lancaster University

Lancaster

UK

The main objective of logistics systems has been to co-ordinate and plan operations in a way that meets customer requirements at minimum cost. In the past this cost has been defined in purely monetary terms. As concern for the environment rises, organisations wish to take more account of the external costs of logistics associated with issues such as climate change, air pollution, and accidents.

An overview of current research in the area of green logistics will be presented which is currently being conducted by a consortium of universities in the U.K. supported by the EPSRC (www.greenlogistics.org). The project is examining ways of achieving more sustainable logistics systems by modelling alternatives and finding a better balance between economic, environmental and social objectives.

In particular, the contribution that can be made by the use of time-varying data on road speeds within a vehicle routing and scheduling system will be described.

Results are presented using data from a case study involving distribution of goods by an electrical wholesaler in the south west of England and issues for further research are discussed.
