Call for Papers INFORMS Transactions on Education
Special Issue: Field Learning Methods and Best Practices in OR/MS

Guest Editor Michael F. Gorman Department of Management Information Systems, Operations Management and Decision Sciences University of Dayton, 300 College Park, Dayton Ohio 45419-2130 michael.gorman@udayton.edu

Field training – student educational experiences that include participation in a practical setting – with industrial partners, non-profit organizations, government agencies or in other applied settings, have great value for students of OR/MS.  Combining the applied and the theoretical gives students a chance to face the challenges of using analytical techniques in the real world.  Instructors wishing to use field training face several challenges, however: recruiting projects from and working with local organizations, ensuring academic rigor, and handling the vagaries of real-world client projects. The aim of this special issue is to share experiences and best practices in order to reduce the cost and improve the quality of such field work experiences for students and instructors.

Example topics for potential submissions include, but are not limited to:
• Review or survey of field-based academic courses in OR/MS
• Detailed accounts of particularly unusual or successful field study courses or programs
• Best practices for structuring field based coursework
• Examples of particularly successful field-based student projects
• Specific methods for ensuring a quality educational experience and limiting risk
• Practical, legal and logistical issues in field based education

Authors should review the INFORMS Transactions on Education instructions on preparing a paper at: http://pubsonline.informs.org/page/ited/submission-guidelines
Papers must be submitted online at:  https://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/ite

The editors encourage potential authors to contact them with ideas for papers before a full submission.
• August, 2016: Target deadline for first round of submissions
• November 2016: First round of reviews completed, Decisions (and requests for revision, if appropriate) delivered to authors
