Spaces in the Greek World
A way to understand and interpret ancient Greece is by focusing on frontiers. Frontiers delimited physical and mental, natural and symbolic spaces. With this in mind, this conference aims to gather contributions that delve into the definition and interaction between ancient Greeks with spaces and frontiers. In some cases, the separation between a sphere and another could be clear; however, in other cases, their fluidity and adaptability would break the classical binomial that in practice did not always structure in such a rigid manner in Greek culture and its society.
Spaces in the Greek World look for a wide variety of topics. Therefore, proposals from different disciplines and approaches will be accepted. A selection of possible themes, although not the only ones, is the following list:
• Public vs. private spaces;
• Spaces for cult and politics;
• In the margins of the Greek world: Hellenism and barbarism;
• Greek colonization: colonial, indigenous, and metropolis spaces;
• Spaces in terms of Gender;
• Rural and urban spheres;
• Social classes and the distribution of spaces. Violence, oppression, and status;
• Mythological spaces, between real and imaginary;
• Landscape;
• Reception at later times.
Proposals should include a summary of 300-500 words, as well as a short bio of the authors (affiliation, research line/s). Paper presentations should be approximately 20 minutes and can be delivered in English, Italian, French, and Spanish. The deadline for sending the proposals is June 15, 2023, inclusive, to
greek.spacesuam@gmail.com. There is a 20€ fee for all participants.
The conference will take place on November 29-30 and December 1, in Madrid. We will notify you in July which proposals have been accepted and the program of the event will be uploaded to the website. It is expected to publish the contribution in a monographic book. More info in:
