Recent issues and future directions on effective multi-tier supply chain management for sustainability International Journal of Production Economics Special Issue Call for Papers Background and themes It has become more common and accepted knowledge that for organizations to remain competitive, and in some cases to survive, a proper balance of economic, environmental and social dimensions needs to be managed in their global operations. This triple-bottom-line perspective is central to organizational sustainability strategy and operations. Sustainability strategies and practices require radical changes in the manner organizations are managed. In the past, mathematical models and solution methods have provided the tools for solving a vast array of traditional supply chain management problems. Sustainability set a new challenge, where problems have become more complex and difficult to solve. Integration and coordination of the different parties in the supply chain, so called multi-tier supply chain, can play an important role in balancing/reducing sustainability impacts. This means that companies have to effectively work with more than one tier and potentially triads (joint multiple suppliers and buying company) to solve sustainability problems.
