EWG DSO, EURO working group on Data Science meets Optimization DSO Workshop at FEDERATED ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE MEETING 2018 (DSO@FAIM) Stockholm, Sweden, 14 July, 2018 |
Saturday 14 July, 9am – 5 pm. Luc De Raedt and Kate Smith-Miles accepted to give a keynote. Data science and optimisation are closely related. On the one hand, many problems in data science (data mining, machine learning, statistical methods, but also problems set in constraint programming) can be solved using optimisers, on the other hand optimisation problems stated through classical models such as those from mathematical programming cannot be considered independent of historical data. Examples are ample. Machine learning often relies on optimisation techniques such as linear or integer programming. A parallel development of metaheuristic approaches has taken place in the domains of data mining and combinatorial optimisation. In the last decades, methods aimed at high level combinatorial optimisation have been shown to strongly profit from configuration and tuning tools building on historical data. Algorithm selection has since the seventies of the previous century been considered as a tool to select the most appropriate algorithm for a given instance. One observation is that the models of combinatorial optimisation are incomplete and need extra information that may be implicit in the available data. Another observation is that data science methods employ algorithms from combinatorial optimisation without profiting from the latest developments. The aim of the current workshop is to bring scientists from the different fields together for a fruitful day of discussions. The aim of the current workshop is to organise an open discussion and exchange of ideas by researchers from AI and OR domains. Authors are invited to send in a contribution in the form of a position paper. A reviewing panel will select the papers to be presented at the workshop according to their suitability to the aims. Finished work highlighting the opportunities will be welcomed, as will be sound descriptions and elaborations on good ideas. Submission deadline: 20 May 2018 Notification of acceptance: 31 May 2018 |

Special Issue: Call for Papers on Innovative Use of Technology and Analytics for Humanitarian Operations Guest Editors: Walter J. Gutjahr, Nilay Noyan, Nico Vandaele, Luk N. Van Wassenhove Deadline for submission: November 30, 2018 |
Natural or man-made disasters, humanitarian crises, pandemics and other emergency situations confront governmental institutions and humanitarian organizations with enormous challenges. Fast decisions under uncertainty have to be made, often under scarce resources, while well-being and lives of humans are at stake. Humanitarian operations can be supported by traditional techniques of engineering, information technology and logistics management, but these approaches frequently turn out to be insufficient in disaster environments. The use of new technologies, or an innovative use of state-of-the-art technologies, promises to overcome some of the limitations of current humanitarian aid. The special issue aims at contributions investigating the application of novel approaches, either on the side of technologies or analytics, to the area of disaster management and humanitarian operations. Submission Guidelines and Review Process: Papers must be submitted at http://www.editorialmanager.com/orsp/ under the category “S.I. Innovative Use of Technology and Analytics for Humanitarian Operations” by November 30, 2018. All papers submitted to this special issue should report original work and make a contribution to the journal OR Spectrum by using a quantitative research paradigm and OR methodologies. According to the aims of OR Spectrum, high quality papers are wanted that match the scope of the journal, show rigor in applying state-of-the-art OR techniques, and promise to have an impact on future work of the OR community. Moreover, the submissions are required to present relevant and original work in humanitarian aid. To fit the mission of the special issue, the papers should have a clear motivation in real problems and applications and a solid practical foundation. Submissions are supposed to be well-grounded in realistic applications. |

Annals of Operations Research Special Issue: Call for Papers on Operations Research for Neuroscience II Guest Editors: Erik Kropat, Ruben A. Tikidji-Hamburyan, Gerhard-Wilhelm Weber Deadline for submission: December 1, 2018 |
Neuroscience is a multidisciplinary science that is concerned with the study of the structure and functions of the nervous system. It comprises aspects of physiology, cellular and molecular biology, as well as behavioral and cognitive science. Recent technological and theoretical advances offer promising opportunities for better understanding of the nervous system at the quantitative level. New optogenetic, in vitro and in vivo multielectrode recording, neuroimaging, brain imaging, and other modern techniques provide high-quality data that can be used in elucidating the fundamental mechanisms of information processing in the nervous system. The rapidly growing pool of experimental data has triggered the development of new mathematical models, which can provide new insights into the functioning of the nervous system at various scales, ranging from that of molecular biology to that of the organizational principles of behavior and cognition. Sophisticated analyses of intracellular signaling or dynamics in heterogeneous neural networks, conditional behavior or connections of brain regions in decision-making lead to theoretical problems, addressed by Operations Research. Although, Operations Research is actively used in bottom-up approach: from experimental observation to consistent theory; it also has wide overlap with modern and rapidly developing formal theories, for example the Free-Energy principle, the Integrated Information theory and many others. The special volume will cover a broad range of topics in the field of neuroscience, which use Operations Research approaches, methods and theories. The use of methods from modern Operations Research in Neuroscience is a prerequisite for any paper submitted to this special volume to enter the reviewing process. |
