Pro Bono O.R. Pro Bono O.R. is a scheme that connects volunteer O.R. analysts to short term projects with charitable organisations across the UK to assist them in making operational improvements. In the last 3 years volunteers have given over 300 hours of their time equating to over £150,000 worth of volunteer hours. Each project whether it be 1 day or 10 days makes a difference to the recipient organisation and both the volunteers and the organisations comment on the positive experience that it is to both. Namur, Belgium, 29-31 May, 2017 https://icdsst2017.wordpress.com/ Purpose of the ICDSST 2017 The main purpose of the EWG-DSS 2017 International Conference on Decision Support System Technology (ICDSST 2017), with its main theme on "Data, Information and Knowledge Visualisation in Decision Making", is to attract researchers, developers and specialists in the related areas of decision making, including its methodologies and technologies, as well as application oriented practitioners directed to the implementation of solutions for societal challenges, to get together in order to exchange experiences and identify the key issues within the areas in focus, so that exploitation of new approaches and tools for future developments can take place. Depending on the research domain, frontiers between data, information and knowledge are not always very formaly specified. Whatever the choosen definition, one will agree on the fact that the three of them are concerned with decision, decision making and decision support This ICDSST 2017 will study the role, the qualities, the models and methods offered by visualisation of data, information and knowledge in the process of decision and the mechanisms of decision support. From data analysis, to knowledge sharing, going through information extraction, visualisation can offer key support to all the phases of a decision making process.  EURO Working Group on Vehicle Routing and Logistics

The VeRoLog conference is an established annual meeting of the EURO Working Group on Vehicle Routing and Logistics Optimization (VeRoLog) bringing together the large community of researchers and practitioners interested in vehicle routing optimization and its relationship with logistics. The conference is open to high-quality methodological contributions, relevant real-world applications, and case studies from industry and the service sector.
The sixth meeting of the EURO Working Group on Vehicle Routing and Logistics Optimization is taking place at the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, on July 10-12, 2017. The workshop is a joint initiative of the Logistics research group of Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam) and the School of Industrial Engineering of Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e).
Abstract Submission
Submissions to VeRoLog 2017 are in the form of a short abstract. Abstracts should be electronically submitted via the conference website (to be announced soon). Accepted abstracts with a registered presenter will be included in the book of abstracts. At most one presentation per registered participant will be accepted. For organizational reasons, the number of participants will be limited to 250. All selected abstracts will be presented in parallel sessions during the conference.

1st AIROYoung workshop on "Emerging Optimization Problems on Complex Networks" Rome, Italy, 16-17 February, 2017 We wish to introduce to your attention AIROYoung; the youth chapter of the Italian Operational Research Society (AIRO) was established last September during the AIRO International Conference (www.airoyoung.org).
We are planning to have the first AIROYoung workshop on "Emerging Optimization Problems on Complex Networks" which will take place at the Statistical Department of the University of Rome, Sapienza on 16th-17th February 2017.
All AIROYoung members, PhD students in Operations Research and people who obtained the PhD in the last five years or who are under 35 years interested in Operations Research, are invited to present their work.
High-quality contributions from young researchers need not be limited to the workshop theme.

7th International Workshop on Multiple Criteria Decision Making' 17 Ustroń, Poland, 2-4 April, 2017 http://www.iwomcdm.ue.katowice.pl International Workshop on Multiple Decision Criteria Making (IWoMCDM) is a scientific event organized every 2 years in Jaskółka Hotel in Ustroń, in the south of Poland among the charming hills of Beskidy Mountains. It ir organised by the Department of Operations Research, University of Economics in Katowice, in cooperation with the Polish Mathematical Society Upper Silesia Branch, INFORMS Polish Section and Polish Operational and Systems Research Society.
It is devoted to the theory and applications in the field of multiobjective optimization, goal programming and multiple criteria decision aid. IWoMCDM papers, after the blind review process, are published in the international journal Multiple Criteria Decision Making (ISSN 2084-1531).
IWoMCDM has been organized since 2005 and accompanies the Polish National Conference on Preference Modelling and Risk. In both events more than 100 participants usually take part, which gives an opportunity to discuss and solve scientific problems in a circle of professionals or start the cooperation and joint future research.

XVIII Congress of the Portuguese Association of Operational Research (IO 2017) Valença, Portugal, 28-30 June, 2017 Operational Research is an applied science that brings to decision making activities the attitude and methods of science. It aims at helping public authorities, enterprises and other organizations to improve their decision processes and to obtain better results. The Portuguese Operational Research (APDIO) promotes multiple activities to develop and to disseminate Operational Research, which include the APDIO Congress as a flagship event. The XVIII Congress of APDIO will be, once again, our main event for professionals, researchers, educators and students interested in Operational Research, or simply willing to learn more about this exciting area. We shall learn, exchange stories of success and failure, socialize, and start new collaborations. We shall meet other communities, both in terms of scientific area and geographical area. In terms of scientific area, Operational Research intersects different fields of mathematics, management, economics, engineering and other sciences that easily relate to our community. In terms of geographical area, the proximity to Spain and particularly Galicia facilitates the presence of delegates from this country, but also other ones. Openness to different scientific areas and to other nationalities has been a tradition in APDIO congresses. To reinforce this tradition, we shall have in this congress a stream of sessions entirely in English language. During the congress the winners of the Isabel Themido and APDIO prizes will be awarded. These prizes recognize a scientific article and a PhD dissertation, respectively. Having students in mind, a new edition of EstudIO will be organized. This is a forum integrated in this congress dedicated to the presentation of selected work from masters and doctoral students. A magnificent scenery and welcoming people await us in Valença. The conference welcomes abstracts on all transportation science and logistics topics including air transportation, facility logistics, freight transportation and logistics, intelligent transportation systems, and urban transportation planning and modeling. Abstracts supporting the conference theme, MOBILITY 2020: Traffic, Transportation and Logistics in a Cyber Connected World, are highly encouraged. Submissions focusing on innovation in transportation and logistics will receive special attention. Abstracts should be 3-5 pages in length. EWEPA (15th European Workshop on Efficiency and Productivity Analysis) London, UK, 12-15 June, 2017 Welcome to the 15th European Workshop on Efficiency and Productivity Analysis (EWEPA). In 2017 this conference is organised by the Centre for Productivity and Performance (CPP) and the School of Business and Economics of Loughborough University, UK.
EWEPA has long been established as a major biennial conference on the topics of productivity, efficiency and performance analysis. Thus the six most recent EWEPA conferences were held in Brussels (2005), Lille (2007), Pisa (2009), Verona (2011), and Helsinki (2013 and 2015).
We expect a very large number of participants to attend EWEPA in London, from a wide international community. Presentations are invited on the theory and application of economics, econometrics, statistics, management science and operational research related to problems in the areas of productivity and efficiency. All popular techniques and methodologies will be represented, including stochastic frontier analysis, data envelopment analysis, bootstrapping approaches, and many more. We also welcome papers on broader issues related to measuring, understanding, incentivising and improving the productivity and performance of firms, public services and industries.

LION 11, Eleventh Learning and Intelligent Optimization Conference Nizhny Novgorod, Russia, 19-21 June, 2017 Scope
Practitioners using heuristic algorithms for hard optimization problems are confronted with the burden of selecting the most appropriate method, in many cases through expensive algorithm configuration and parameter tuning. Scientists seek theoretical insights and demand a sound experimental methodology for evaluating algorithms and assessing strengths and weaknesses. This effort requires a clear separation between the algorithm and the experimenter, who, in too many cases, is "in the loop" as a motivated intelligent learning component. LION deals with designing and engineering ways of "learning" about the performance of different techniques, and ways of using past experience about the algorithm behavior to improve performance in the future. Intelligent learning schemes for mining the knowledge obtained online or offline can improve the algorithm design process and simplify the applications of high-performance optimization methods. Combinations of different algorithms can further improve the robustness and performance of the individual components.
This meeting, which continues the successful LION series, explores the intersections and uncharted territories between machine learning, artificial intelligence, mathematical programming and algorithms for hard optimization problems. Russia has a long tradition in optimization theory, computational mathematics and "intelligent learning techniques" (in particular cybernetics and statistics). The location of LION11 in Nizhny is an occasion to meet researchers and consolidate research and human links. In internet time the value of a conference must go well beyond presenting scientific papers. In particular, we are discussing and planning:
*Contests in continuous and discrete optimization.

Firms like Amazon, Zara or Walmart developed operational innovations which have been adopted also in other industries. In the last decade, e-commerce and omni-channel retailing, technological advances and the rise of big data have changed retail practice, operational requirements and the competitive landscape. Retail operations have unique elements, such as multi-channel operations, assortment planning, shelf-space allocation, store execution that are different from issues faced by other players in the supply chain. The continued development of quantitative models, their practical need, and the growing availability of data motivates an increasing number of scientists and practitioners to intensify research on demand and supply-related issues in retail and consumer goods industries. The objective of this special issue is to accelerate the development and application of quantitative approaches for problem-solving and decision-making in retail operations. Real-world decision problems require analysis of pertinent factors that affect a final decision. Nowadays, for most industries - including air transport and logistics - to get and maintain competitive advantage, it is not sufficient to consider traditional single-criterion models oriented towards cost minimization or profit maximization. Consequently, other important impacts and goals need to be accounted. These concern, for instance, flexibility, security, frequency, reliability, efficiency, or sustainability. As multiple criteria are usually in conflict, conclusions which can be derived only from the analysis of performances of considered alternatives on a set of criteria are usually too weak. Therefore, working out a recommendation relies, to a high degree, on the preference information elicited from the stakeholders playing the role of decision makers (DMs). Multiple Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) offers a diversity of methods designed for structuring the decision problems and carrying forward its solution by incorporating human judgment into data analysis. In this regard, MCDM approaches are of essential help in constructing a model of Decision Makers' preferences and its subsequent exploitation which leads to a recommendation on how to make a new decision under specific circumstances. At the same time, they offer tools which are appropriate for answering questions asked by stakeholders in a decision process. Over the last decades, MCDM has proven its usefulness in such various fields as management, education, finance, economics, environmental protection, medicine, or engineering. Due to numerous successful applications, it becomes more and more prevailing also in other industries. This special issue aims to collect some high quality papers which apply MCDM methods in air transport and logistics management, thus, illustrating how this domain can benefit from the use of MCDM.  EURO Working Group on Decision Support Systems
The "EWG-DSS-Award" was launched in 2011 as a motivating research initiative for young researchers to submit and present their work in one of the EWG-DSS annual organized workshops and conference streams. The annual "EWG-DSS-Award" chooses the best and most innovative among submitted and presented work by students or young researchers, in the EWG-DSS organized workshops and conference streams of the same year, to be rewarded with a modest prize in money. The EWG-DSS hopes to count with sponsorship from research funds and from the industrial sector to make the "EWG-DSS-Award" more financially appealing. We hope you can support this initiative by financially sponsoring it if possible, or participating and/or disseminating this information among your students, colleagues, research partners and collaborators. For 2017, applicable work submitted to the EWG-DSS International Conference on Decision Support Systems Technology ICDSST 2017 in Namur, Belgium, in May 2017; and to the EWG-DSS Streams organized in other Conferences in 2017, will be taken into consideration for this award. Usually, the prize given in money is of €300,00. For the next year, the EWG-DSS hopes to count with sponsorship from research funds and from the industrial sector to make the "EWG-DSS-Award" financially appealing. 2018 Flajolet Lecture Prize The Philippe Flajolet Lecture Prize for outstanding contributions to analytic combinatorics and analysis of algorithms is awarded every two years by the Analysis of Algorithms (AofA) community that owes its existence to Philippe Flajolet. The first Flajolet Lecture was presented by D. E. Knuth at the 2014 AofA International Conference on Probabilistic, Combinatorial and Asymptotic Methods for the Analysis of Algorithms, Paris, France, and the second one by Bob Sedgewich at the 2016 AofA Conference in Krakow, Poland.
The next Flajolet Lecture will be delivered at the 2018 AofA Conference in Uppsala, Sweden. Nominations are due on February 28, 2017. The winner will be selected by a Prize Committee consisting of:

Mireille Bousquet-Melou (Univ. Bordeaux)
Peter Winkler (Dartmouth College)
Bob Sedgewick, ex officio (Princeton University)
The nomination letter should summarize his/her contributions in one or two pages. All nominations should be sent to Michael Drmota at michael.drmota@tuwien.ac.at .
In selecting the Flajolet-Prize winner, the Committee will pay particular attention to a sustained record of high-impact, seminal contributions to the research areas most directly impacted by the work of Flajolet: the foundations of analysis of algorithms and/or analytic combinatorics. The selection may also be based partly on educational accomplishments and contributions such as fundamental textbooks and high-quality students. The final selection will be approved by the Steering Committee of the AofA. |
