RESEARCH SEMINAR

Between Migrations and Rejections: Cross-perspectives on Undesirability and Assisted Return in the Twentieth Century

Wednesday and Tuesday

5:30 – 8:00 pm (French time zone)

Seminar online

Organization Yvette Dos Santos (LARHRA, ENS-EU MISC)

The international seminar Migrations and Rejections brings together scholars specializing in migration history and postcolonial history to reflect on the policies and practices of rejection and assisted return of migrant populations during the twentieth century. Adopting a multi-sited geopolitical perspective, spanning both European and transatlantic spaces, the seminar aims to:

1.      Critically examine how migrant populations were rendered vulnerable and subsequently transformed into “undesirable” individuals by host countries;

2.      Analyze the role of assisted return in these rejections and interrogate its implications for both communities and countries of origin;

3.      Offer a comparative perspective on assisted returns by connecting postcolonial and non-colonial migration realities, to identify similarities and differences in the policies, practices, and stakes of repatriation for populations and for countries of origin.
