International colloquium
The history of the Society of Jesus in the “writing of history”
The history of the Society of Jesus, mainly from its foundation in 1540 to its suppression in 1773, but also in the 20th century, when it played an important role in various fields in Europe and around the world, has given rise to numerous works, often philojesuit or anti-Jesuit. Over the past thirty years, however, there has been a proliferation of books, articles and symposia in which the history of the Society of Jesus is no longer necessarily at the center of the perspective, but which, in a variety of ways, encounter this history and include it in their research. It is these new approaches that this forthcoming colloquium aims, for the first time, to bear witness to, by asking a group of researchers from around the world the same question:
What specific contribution has the use of Jesuit sources and historiography made to your research? What shifts in space and time has it enabled you to make, by confronting a global institutional reality with five centuries of existence behind it?
The aim of this symposium is to hear the views of specialists from a wide variety of current research fields on this major historiographical question. From the outset, however, we can identify several main themes:
1. History of colonization and independence
2. History of the genesis of modern states
3. History of science and knowledge
4. History of theologies
5. History of educational institutions
6. History of preaching, confession and apostolic techniques
7. History of visual arts and literature
8. History of the culture of orality, manuscript and print
9. History of hagiography and sanctity
As is now customary, this meeting will take place in hybrid mode. This mode will enable us to be as open to the world as possible. However, we will be welcoming to Mexico several of the best specialists in the history of the Society of Jesus, who will lead our debates.
We invite you to send a proposal for a talk (approx. 1000 characters, including spaces) by 15 october 2025 to: siejesuites@gmail.com
The languages of presentation will be Spanish and English.
One of the aims of this colloquium is to promote the development of research in areas of social, cultural and intellectual history that are often insufficiently supported by today's research administration. With this in mind, we will be selecting three of the best proposals from young Latin American researchers currently in doctoral or post-doctoral studies for an invitation to come to Mexico City.
We will also be advising on the best possible accommodation for all our colleagues, whether young or experienced researchers, whose travel expenses could be covered by their home institution.
